Leicestershire & Rutland Heritage Awards 2009
In 2009, Leicestershire County Council and the Leicestershire and Rutland Museums Forum celebrated the 20th annual Heritage Awards in style at Stapleford Park Country House Hotel near Melton Mowbray.

Awards were presented in six categories by dignitaries including Jennifer, Lady Gretton, the Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Roger Wilson CC, Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, David Parsons CBE CC, Leader of Leicestershire County Council, Ernie White CC, Leicestershire County Council's cabinet Lead Member for Better Places, Alan Duncan MP, Member of Parliament for Melton & Rutland, and Emma Chaplin, representing the Museums Association and the Association of Independent Museums.

The 'Achievement Award' was Presented to the museum or organisation the judges deemed to have achieved most over a longer period of time. This is a special award to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Heritage Awards. The Trust were joint winners of the award with Castle Donington Museum

Swannington Heritage Trust
, formed in 1984 as a Company limited by guarantee and a registered Charity, aims to provide, establish and preserve facilities in the village of Swannington and its neighbourhood for the study of industrial, agricultural and general archaeology and other matters of local historical, ecological or environmental interest for the benefit of the public. It has established an archive of village history and conserves a number of important heritage sites-

Swannington incline, part of one of the world's earliest railways.

Swannington Hough windmill which it has refurbished.

Ancient common land which exhibits landscape evidence of medieval coal mining activities.

A woodland nature reserve containing the remains of Califat colliery, a 19th century mine.

Site of Snibston No. 3 colliery, a 19th. Century mine.

The Swannington Village Trail booklet guides walkers through the village and surrounding delightful countryside to examine the above and many other features. Price £2.50 inc. P&P or £5.00 overseas. Members receive the biannual newsletter Swannington Now and Then, which contains local study features. Annual subscription is £5.

A Millennium Video describing the development of the village costs £12.00 inc. P&P or £15.00 overseas.
