FAMILY HISTORY

The Trust was a member of the village's Millennium Committee, which, among other things, produced an Archive cupboard in the Village Hall, which contains a photo archive of special village events together with historic photographs of this community and of the neighbouring hamlet of Peggs Green. Included in the Archive are photocopies of documents and maps, which describe features and people from the community, many of which have been contributed from other parts of the country or the world. Genealogy of a number of local families has been recorded and a computer and fiche reader can be made available, by appointment, for researchers wishing to study the village's Parish and Census records; minutes of the Parish Vestry and Council meetings; one of the School logs and a Terrier giving the occupation of properties in 1697.

Some of the local families researched are: Knight (of Stordon Grange), Platts, Orton, Johnson, Marsden, Walker, Mugilston, Burton, Jesson and Halfpenny. The Trust produces a biannual newsletter, which records features of village and community life and families and detailed histories of the Church, the Wesleyan Chapel, the School, the Village Hall and coalmining and railway industries are also available. The Trust has also supplied and maintains a Heritage cabinet in the village School which contains historic finds from the village covering the period from the Neolithic to the Victorian age. This enables children to handle items from the past relating to their studies. The Trust produced an hour long Village video which describes the development of Swannington, its industries and its community from its early days to the year 2000.
